Overview

Eliza Jennings is a nonprofit senior care network based in Northeast Ohio, with a 130-year legacy rooted in compassion and philanthropy. Founded by Eliza Jennings in the late 1800s as a “Home for Incurable Women,” the organization has grown into a trusted provider of skilled nursing, assisted
living, and independent living across four facilities — all united by a mission to serve older adults with dignity and excellence.

Challenge

When Laura Banner, Director of Revenue Cycle Management, looked to strengthen financial accuracy across Medicaid operations, her team was already stretched thin. Before CoreCare, business office managers and billers at Eliza Jennings were mired in a highly manual verification process.Ohio’s state Medicaid portal required numerous keystrokes for each resident, and re-verifying eligibility monthly for a large Medicaid population consumed critical staff time.

“The verification process was exhausting,” Banner recalled. “It took so many clicks just to confirm one resident’s benefits, and our team had dozens to review.”

This burden was especially acute at the flagship Eliza Jennings Home, where 95% of residents are on Medicaid. “Sometimes we found out the hard way that someone had lost eligibility or changed managed care plans,” she explained. “Without enough time in the day, reverifications didn’t always happen. That created the risk of uncollectible revenue.”

In several instances, residents were retroactively found ineligible, leaving the organization exposed to potential write-offs of $20,000 or more due to missing authorizations.

Solution

Having worked with CoreCare at a prior organization, Banner immediately recognized the value the platform could bring to Eliza Jennings. CoreCare’s automated verification technology replaced manual processes with customizable schedules and real-time alerts, providing immediate insight into eligibility changes, demographic mismatches, patient liability updates, and MCO transitions. Teams can access eligibility reports for an entire building in seconds—no more downloading PDFs and manually attaching them to each profile.

“It’s like the everything bagel of Medicaid verification software,” said Banner. “We finally had everything in one place: eligibility alerts, program changes, patient liability, even demographic discrepancies. And it was all on one dashboard.”

One early use case proved the platform’s value instantly. Banner recalled a time when a facility was operating without a dedicated business office manager. While regional staff tried to maintain coverage, CoreCare flagged that two Medicaid residents had lost eligibility.

“In the past, that could have gone unnoticed until billing was processed,” Banner said. “Instead, CoreCare alerted us in real time. We were able to reapply for Medicaid immediately and avoid $20,000 to $30,000 in write offs.”

At the Eliza Jennings Home, staff report saving at least 8 hours per month on Medicaid verification alone. By centralizing documentation and automating reverifications, team members reclaimed time previously spent clicking through state portals and manually tracking eligibility.

This time savings has translated into more accurate billing and a stronger focus on collections. Banner noted, “We can now spot a patient liability change and immediately send an updated statement to the resident or their family. That keeps our revenue accurate and compliant.”

Conclusion

For a mission-driven nonprofit like Eliza Jennings, efficiency isn’t just about financial performance—it’s about protecting the resources that fund resident care. With CoreCare, the organization turned one of its most time consuming administrative tasks into a streamlined, automated process that saves hours each month and safeguards revenue.

“CoreCare delivers exactly what we need—accurate data, time savings, and proactive alerts,” said Banner. “It’s been an incredibly helpful tool, especially for facilities with large Medicaid populations. The ROI is clear.”
